Eric Nash is a Southern California artist living and working in the Mojave High Desert, creating oil paintings and charcoal drawings that capture the mythology, isolation and restless romance of the American West. Working in long-running, tightly edited series developed over decades, Nash transforms iconic California imagery; freeway signs, desert horizons, pools at twilight, moons and ravens into suspended cinematic totems charged with memory, atmosphere and longing.

Artist Statement

Raised on the flat prairies of Illinois and trained in the Bauhaus tradition at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Nash developed an early visual language rooted in restraint, precision and reduction. Influenced by Edward Hopper, Ed Ruscha, photorealism, film noir and the graphic power of cinematography, his work distills images down to their essential emotional core. Every creation begins with observation and obsessive image hunting, a relentless pursuit of an unresolved moment, elusive light or visceral feeling.

Although Nash is often associated with photorealism, his work resists categorization, using realism as a method rather than an identity. Precise yet charged with ambiguity, his work balances immaculate craftsmanship with spatial tension, desire and resonance . He describes this visual world as “Western Noir.”

Since moving to California in 2000, Nash has built a robust body of work that continues to evoke and refract the visual culture of the West. Living and working between Los Angeles and the desert has solidified a distinctly Californian artistic vocabulary: bold, graphic, sun-faded, cinematic and unmistakably modern.

Over the past two decades, Nash has exhibited extensively throughout California and New York, including museum exhibitions at the Palm Springs Art Museum, Laguna Art Museum, Riverside Art Museum and Hilbert Art Museum. His work is held in private, corporate and public collections, including a large-scale installation at the Delta Sky Club at Los Angeles International Airport. A work encountered in motion, between departure and arrival.

Nash’s work canonizes the American West as exact, inevitable, luminous and elemental, familiar, already fading yet impossible to forget.
